Opening The Closed Shops is a three-year project started in 2007 by five art centres – Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart; Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle, Warsaw; Jozsef Attila Circle, Budapest; InterSpace Media Art Centre, Sofia; and Kuda.org, Novi Sad.
Through artistic excellence and interdisciplinary cooperation, as well as artists’ residencies, the project develops an ongoing dialogue, resulting in concrete public projects such as exhibitions, publications, workshops, concerts, and performances. There will also be an artistic residency exchange programme between the partners of the Akademie Schloss Solitude. Organised in the context of different national art scenes, the project gives a very modest tribute to the enlargement and openness of the contemporary art world in Europe.
Every year, five Akademie Schloss Solitude artists spend three months in a partner city, while five artists from corresponding institutions spend the same amount of time living and working in the Akademie Schloss Solitude. In addition, one artist from each partner institution has the opportunity to travel to a partner city, in order to spend three months living and working there.
